Dakota County is the third-most populous county in the U.S. state of Minnesota, located in the east central portion of the state. The county seat is Hastings. Dakota County is named for the Dakota Sioux tribal bands who inhabited the area.
The county has a total area of 587 square miles (1,520 km²), of which 562 square miles (1,460 km²) is land and 25 square miles (65 km²) (4.2%) is water.
According to the 2010 United States Census, Dakota County had a population of 398,552, of which 195,661 (49.1%) were male and 202,891 (50.9%) were female. The median age was 36.8 years.
